Superpollutants: Tackling a Major Climate Threat

September 19, 2025

The Carbon Containment Lab team, in collaboration with Calyx Global—a leading carbon credit ratings organization—examined the current case for addressing superpollutants.

Superpollutants, including methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases, are a critical piece of the climate puzzle.

While they are often shorter-lived than CO₂, their climate impact is far more intense. In fact, superpollutants are responsible for roughly half of the warming we are experiencing today. Annually, they account for over a quarter of all anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, totaling around 15 gigatonnes of CO₂ equivalent. And this may be an underestimate; emerging satellite data suggest methane emissions are significantly larger than previously reported.

In this whitepaper, prepared by CC Lab and Calyx Global, we assess the total mitigation potential of these gases and review what carbon markets have achieved so far in reducing their emissions. Building on this foundation, we project potential growth scenarios and explore how carbon credit buyers can help accelerate progress toward meaningful impact.
